Globa Enerji

GLOBA ENERGY SUCCESS STORY

About the Project

Project Capacity: 10 MW

Project Location: Denizli, Turkey

Product Used: YTM SMART

Project Type: Land

About the Customer

Globa Energy is one of Turkey’s innovative companies operating in the field of solar energy. In Denizli, the company established a 10 MW ground-mounted power plant. The company develops robot technologies and uses cleaning panels for solar panels to ensure efficiency. The company, which uses roof-type PV systems besides ground-mounted ones, reduces energy loss thanks to the robots it applies. These robots, specially designed by the company, clean the panel surfaces without water and contribute to energy production. Globa Energy, which exports both energy production and technology, represents Turkey in the global solar energy sector.

Problem/Opportunity

The Solar Power Plant is heavily exposed to dust due to environmental conditions, which significantly reduces the efficiency of the panels. Manual cleaning methods were both time-consuming and inefficient. Cleaning a 10 MW power plant took approximately 10 days, and there were significant energy losses during the cleaning period. Additionally, “hot spot” formations caused by temperature differences on the panels were observed, which also shortened the panel’s lifespan.

Solution

A land-type PV panel cleaning robot specially developed by Globa Energy for the project was introduced. The robot automatically cleans the panel surfaces with pure water and reaches points that manual cleaning cannot access. Within the scope of the project, the use of the robot, the special panel type of the plant, the slope, and the regional dirt rate were taken into account and customized. Comprehensive training was provided to operators on technical training, panel safety, and occupational health and safety.

Outcome

  • Cleaning time was reduced by 80%, and the 10-day operation shortened to 2 days.
  • A significant increase in energy production efficiency was achieved.
  • Panel lifespan increased, and maintenance costs decreased.
  • Investment payback period accelerated.
  • The system continues to produce energy in a sustainable, regular, and risk-free manner.

“The panel cleaning that we previously forced to do in 10 days is now done easily and efficiently in 2 days.”

With its R&D investments, it provides innovative solutions to the industry, prioritizing food safety and customer satisfaction.

Problem: Rising Energy Costs and the Need for Sustainability

During the new investment phase, the factory’s high energy demand and rising costs were major challenges in line with sustainability goals. Increasing environmental standards and carbon footprint criteria in international markets made the use of green energy mandatory. However, there were technical difficulties in establishing a solar power plant:

  • Designing a system with sufficient capacity to meet energy needs
  • Adapting panel and robotic cleaning solutions to the unique barrel roof structure of the factory
  • Ensuring efficient and cost-effective operation of the system
  • Maintaining high performance of the solar energy system

Solution: Solar Energy Investment and Robotic Cleaning for Barrel Roofs

In 2014, the factory with barrel-roof architecture was established, and in 2020, a 2.8 MW solar power plant was commissioned. Panels suitable for the roof structure were installed. Since manual cleaning methods were insufficient, a robotic cleaning system suitable for barrel roofs was deployed. Excess energy in summer was sold to the grid for additional income, while in winter, most of the facility’s energy demand was met by the solar plant. Thanks to Robsys’ barrel roof cleaning robot, the investment paid off in only 2 years instead of the expected 7–8 years.

Outputs: Profitable and Sustainable Production

  • The power plant quickly paid for itself with fast ROI.
  • Significant reduction in energy costs; most electricity demand covered by solar energy, with surplus sales in summer.
  • Gained international competitive advantage with green energy use and compliance with eco-friendly production criteria.
  • Increased production efficiency; robotic cleaning preserved panel efficiency despite seasonal pollution.

Conclusion

Güngör Olive’s energy transformation and sustainability investment not only reduced operating costs but also created a model for the industry with its integrated environmental awareness and innovative approach. The factory achieved high-performance solar energy operations with design and maintenance solutions tailored to its unique barrel roof.

“Initially, we expected this investment to pay off in 7–8 years, but thanks to the high efficiency of solar energy, we achieved ROI in just 2 years.”

About Dalgakıran Compressor

Dalgakıran Compressor, Turkey’s largest industrial compressor manufacturer and exporter, was founded in 1965 by Ömer Dalgakıran in a modest 25 m² workshop in Istanbul. Since its establishment, the company has grown rapidly through continuous investments and today operates a production facility spanning more than 70,000 m².

As one of Turkey’s top 500 exporters, Dalgakıran reliably exports compressors to over 130 countries worldwide, while continuing to invest, grow, and contribute to the development of both industry and the economy.

With over 60 years of experience, a dynamic team, and a commitment to customer satisfaction in an increasingly globalized market, Dalgakıran serves clients across the world through more than 150 dealers, branches, and an extensive service network.

About the Project

A field study was conducted at Dalgakıran’s rooftop solar power plant in the Marmara Region to demonstrate the impact of panel cleaning on both energy generation and economic performance. As part of the study, only one group of panels connected to a designated test inverter was cleaned using a robotic method. Production and thermal data were meticulously analyzed before and after cleaning.

The Challenge

Dust, bird droppings, dirt, and other particles accumulating on the surface of solar panels block sunlight, reducing energy production.

Thermal imaging taken before cleaning showed that dirty panel areas reached surface temperatures as high as 55–60 °C. This demonstrated that dirt was obstructing irradiation absorption, leading to thermal asymmetry and performance losses.

Energy production data clearly revealed the impact of soiling: the test inverter connected to dirty panels produced significantly less compared to reference inverters, with the performance gap becoming more apparent during peak sunlight hours.

If cleaned manually, the main difficulties and risks would have included:

  • Hundreds of hours of intensive labor
  • High water consumption
  • Human error and risk of damage to panel surfaces
  • Significant occupational health and safety risks (due to high rooftops and sloped surfaces)
  • Challenges in operational planning and coordination

The Solution

Using the Robsys RTM Pro product, the robotic cleaning system efficiently cleaned the solar panel surfaces with specially designed brushes and controlled pressure, consuming minimal water. This technology ensured the effective removal of dirt, improving both panel performance and energy output.

Key Benefits of Robsys Robotic Cleaning Systems:

• Speed and Efficiency
The robotic method was approximately 8–12 times faster compared to manual cleaning.

• Safety
Because the cleaning robots were remotely operated, the need for personnel to work at heights was minimized. As a result, occupational safety risks and related operational costs were reduced.

• Water Efficiency
The robots used targeted and controlled water application, consuming 60–70% less water than manual cleaning. This not only lowered costs but also provided a significant environmental advantage by conserving natural resources.

• Quality and Panel Protection
Robots were equipped with specially designed brushes and adjustable pressure settings to avoid damaging panel surfaces. Thanks to these features, the risk of micro-scratches was significantly reduced. Robotic cleaning ensured safe, damage-free cleaning while also enabling more consistent maintenance planning, helping panels operate efficiently for many years.

• Cost-Effectiveness
Although requiring an initial investment, robotic cleaning systems delivered substantial long-term savings in labor, water, and operational expenses.

The Results

• Increased Energy Production
After cleaning, the test inverter produced approximately 15–25% more energy compared to the reference inverters left uncleaned on the same day.

• Improved Thermal Performance
Panel surface temperatures dropped by around 25–30% after cleaning. This indicated that the removal of dirt reduced irradiation blockage and allowed the panels to cool more effectively.

Thermal Images Taken Before Cleaning

Thermal Images Taken from the Field After the Cleaning Process

  • • Economic Impact
On an annual basis, the project enabled additional energy production measured in the hundreds of thousands of kWh, resulting in significant extra revenue.

    • Cost Savings
Compared to manual cleaning, robotic cleaning systems provided operational savings amounting to millions of Turkish Lira annually.

    • Return on Investment
When both energy gains and operational savings were considered, the investment generated meaningful net returns each year. The system typically paid for itself in around two years, after which investors enjoyed substantial net profit.
