Photovoltaic (PV) panels need to be cleaned regularly to produce energy efficiently. Dirt, dust, bird droppings and other pollutants that accumulate on the surface of photovoltaic panels cause shading and cause a decrease in the production of the solar panel.
1. Determination of Cleaning Time
The cleaning process should be done during hours when the production of photovoltaic panels is low. This can happen early in the morning or late in the evening. In this way, cleaning is achieved without any loss in production.
2. Preparation of Necessary Equipment
In the equipment to be used for photovoltaic panel cleaning, it is important to use materials that will not damage the panel surface and use a solvent that will not leave marks on the solar panels after cleaning. For example, since there are no solids in pure water, it will not leave any traces on the solar panels after cleaning.
3. Checking the Surface of the Panels
Before starting the cleaning process, the surface of the panels should be checked for any damage. Broken or cracked panels should not be cleaned, and an authorized service should be consulted for repair.
4. Cleaning Process
A soft brush or cloth should be used to avoid damaging the surface of the panels. Abrasive substances and hard brushes should never be used. Panels should be washed with pure water that does not contain chemicals. Water is applied evenly to the surface of the panel to soften the dirt. If there is concern about the mineral content of the water, water with low mineral content can be used. In cases of heavy contamination, soap or special cleaning solutions recommended by the manufacturer can be used. These solutions allow dirt to be removed easily. If soap or solution was used, the panels should be rinsed with plenty of water. No chemical groups must remain on the panels.
5. Regular Checks and Maintenance
Regularly checking the panels and determining the frequency of cleaning is important for long-term efficiency. Panels located in especially dusty and dirty areas may need to be cleaned more frequently.
Photovoltaic panel cleaning is one of the main ways to maintain and increase energy efficiency. Regular and correct cleaning prolongs the life of the panels and ensures maximum energy production. Therefore, care should be taken during the cleaning process and the manufacturer’s instructions should be followed.
